Wow! Thanks for the great response!

My email has been going nuts with people wanting to know more about this project. In the next couple of days I am going to be posting answers to all of your questions along with pictures of the inside of the tablet and a complete parts list for everything that went into making this. Thanks to all of you for the great feedback I have been getting.

  1. Im curious what your thoughts on this idea might be.

Wonder if you could use a laptop such as this one:
    http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=G50VM-X1-PB-R&AID=10440852&CJPID=1225267

Detach the screen and remove the keyboard/mouse.. then re-attach the screen backwards, over where the mouse/keybard was.

And then use the virtualvillage.com touch screen over it... Add in the accelerometer.

Then use the carbon kit to seal it all together.

    Pros:
    - Super fast (4gigs of ram duel processor)
    - Larger Screen
    - More ports
    - built in webcam

    Cons:
    - It would be thicker and heavier then yours
    - Battery life would be less

Would love to get your input, i may try and do this project and keep you posted on it!

  2. In theory you could do that, but what you described is going to take a lot of work and a lot of time. Plus, that laptop is so big and heavy that I'm not sure if it would be of much use as a tablet. You couldn't really use it handheld because of the bulk and weight. But if that's what you want than that's what you should make. I don't think you are going to see any tablets coming out that are that big, so if you want that you're going to have to build it.

  5. Dear Slampana,
I am a teacher at a primary school. I would like a ‘tablet’ which would help
children, first year students, write the alphabet.

I am looking for a tablet that is not a full function computer the way real tablets are. I need it only recognize the touch of a ‘marker’ or ‘pen’ that the kids write on, as well as be viewed by the teacher at a main computer, as each child would have one.

The software (I am looking into as there are already an abundance of these) would allow the student to follow an outline (a thick one for very first-time learners) of a letter, trace it with the tab's electronic pen, and if not within the boundaries, the app software would tell them they were wrong.

I was motivated having read the book “Abundance” and seeing the ideas-all of which were new to me, but particularly in the field of education.
This ‘tablet’ has the potential of being a fraction the price of what others do. But how on earth to go about it? Ebay the parts and make it myself?

If you can steer me in a right direction, then that would be most appreciated, to say the least.

    Thank you very much,
